About Us

History

The Halifax Convention Chapter Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on January 12, 1909. We are one of the oldest chapters in North Carolina.

Our chapter name was chosen in commemoration of the assemblage of North Carolina Patriots held at Halifax on April 12, 1776. At this meeting, the delegates decided that the colony of North Carolina would be free and independent from England. These resolves, adopted at the Halifax Convention, marked the first official action calling for independence by any colony, and paved the way for the United States Declaration of Independence less than three months later. For more than 100 years, our members have been actively involved in the community, proudly championing the values of history, patriotism, and education.

Chapter members participate in National DAR Day of Service by cleaning donated books at Charlotte’s Promising Pages.

Members enjoyed our spring chapter social with a cooking class at Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen.

Every December, chapter members participate in Wreaths Across America at a local cemetery.

Meetings

Our chapter meets in the months from January through May and September through December. These meetings provide an opportunity for fellowship and education, as well as planning and working on projects that promote the DAR objectives of historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

Most meetings feature guest speakers that are diverse in interest and expertise which include professors, community leaders, authors, doctors, and elected officials.

Programs focus on an array of topics ranging from patriotic, historical, or constitutional to health, education, or preservation. We also host both an annual field trip and a holiday luncheon.

Examples of some recent programs include the following.
